About Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass Surgery
The Roux-en-Y gastric pass (RYGB) is considered the “gold standard” for weight loss surgical operation for bariatric and metabolic surgical treatment. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is often done as a laparoscopic surgery, with small incisions in the abdomen. This procedure reduces the size of the upper stomach to a small pouch about the size of an egg. Surgeon does this by stapling off the upper section of the stomach. This reduces the amount of food one can eat. Then this pouch is attached directly to a part of the small intestine known as the Roux limb. This forms a “Y” shape. The food then bypasses the rest of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. This also reduces the number of calories and fat absorbed from the food.
